I visited the Volcano Farmers Market really early on Sunday morning and came away with all sorts of great stuff...among them these mangoes and the cutest tiny little bananas ever...
I got the mangoes from Marla and Pete Hunter - Eke Nui Nursery in Na'alehu - with names like Mapuleha, Golden Glow, Manzanillo and Gouveia and many more, their booth was deliciously looking.... We ate the MaPulehas last night before I took the photo...they were gorgeous and very fragrant and sweet.
The tiny fat 'naners I got from Debbie Ward of the La'iku Organic Farm in Kurtistown are called 'silk bananas' and Debbie said the green ones can be fried as you would plantains... I'm letting some ripen to eat as fruit and tonight I will cook some of the green ones as veggies...
The round yellow fruit in front center is a passionfruit picked from our yard

They are good... something that surprised me though, is that peel is really thin in this variety, but it sticks to the banana pretty much and it is harder to peel than a regular nanner!

Mahalo, Sherron....I realized it after I had re read the post but it was too late then... All I know is that the mangoes were delicious!
By the way, you might be interested to know that the mangoes for the 6 tier Mango Cake Hector Wong made and decorated during the Mango Festival in Kona came from Marla and Pete's place... I blogged about it a month ago.

Aloha, Sonia
Love your posts, as usual. Thought you would like to know that the spelling for the mango from Pete & Marla is Mapulehu. The only reason I know is that we got our Mapulehu tree from them and it produced its very first crop this year! But don't feel bad; even Ken got it wrong on his preliminary mango chart and had to check with Marla before he would correct it. ;D
