The 6th Hawaiian Natural Honey Challenge judging was held on Tuesday, September 1st at the Nani Mau Gardens in Hilo.
The honey judged comes in liquid, solid or as a slice of comb in glass canning jars. Honey jars from all over the state are sent in by a certain date; a number is assigned to each and the judges do a blind testing using a strict set of criteria.
There were 83 different entries this year. In order to be eligible, the beekeeper must use only natural means to produce and process their honey - organic livestock management, no chemicals or pesticides to treat the bees or the hives, and no heating, churning. or 'seeding' the honey (to make it crystallize artificially).
Winners will be announced at the Hawaiian Honey Festival (see below)

The judges were presented with beautiful baskets filled with delicious jar of honey, Hawaii's Local Buzz Tropical Shortbread Cookies (mine were Ka'u Coffee), a bottle of mead, macadamia nuts, a beeswax candle in the shape of a skep, a locally made "Filthy Farmgirl" Beeswax Vanilla Cream Soap and a small potted (blooming) bromeliad.
3rd Annual Hawaii Honey Festival will be held on Saturday, September 26 at the Nani Mau Gardens in Hilo and for the first time ever there will be a Honey Cooking Contest

There will be 1st, 2nd and 3rd exciting prizes in each category and 1 Best of Show.
