A few years ago, the Wednesday Editor of Gather Writing Essentials ( a social media site that, alas...no longer exists!) sent out a challenge and this was my response.

Pam’s Challenge: Write a story, picture essay or poem about the sea. A warm, lovely sea.
Not much of a challenge when you live in Hawai’i, but to help warm Pam up, I made the effort…;-)
(This is our village, as seen from the air)
I live on an island anchored by 5 volcanoes and surrounded by seas…warm seas…tropical seas…beautiful blue Hawaiian seas.
As you drive around the island there are not too many places where you can’t see the sea…up close or from a distance…but you’re always aware of the sea.
The sea is ever present…and the island residents know how to enjoy it…surfing, kayaking, fishing, swimming…paddling a canoe as ancient water transportation meets the modern floating cities…
The moods of the sea might change from calm to angry…but you can always find a quiet cove somewhere to just be as one with your surrounds…
Until the sun bids us aloha as it hides until the next morning to repeat the stunning cycle…
The sea…our beautiful sea, will always be there…
